Aja'ib al-Animal

Aja'ib al-Animal is a collection of conceptual sculptures that, with a satirical tone, link the Iranian visual memory of Zakariya al-Qazwini’s Aja'ib al-Makhluqat (Wonders of Creation) to the sphinxes, minotaurs, and griffins of world mythology. At the same time, by blending contemporary human aesthetics with these mythological creatures, it seeks to create a symbolic connection between human identity and natural instincts. This fusion not only highlights the physical and behavioral similarities between humans and animals but also explores themes such as harmony with nature, identity, culture, and biological heritage.

These hybrid beings sometimes act as humorous metaphors for human characteristics, and at other times as formal explorations that challenge the limits of mind and body.

In a modern world where humans often see themselves as separate from nature, claiming dominion and exploitation of the natural world and other creatures as a right, this collection serves as a reminder that we are merely one part of the global ecosystem—our fate intertwined with that of all other beings.

Aja'ib al-Animal also stands at an intersection—combining contemporary materials and technologies with wood, paint, and other familiar natural substances—seeking to reflect this hybridity in the execution of the works themselves.
